Music Therapy Program Director:
Shannon del'Etoile, Ph.D., MT-BC
The purpose
of the University of Miami Music Therapy Program is to prepare professional
music therapists to work with individuals of all ages and in a variety
of conditions. The undergraduate curriculum includes a well-rounded
background in music (music theory, music literature, and performance),
humanities, and social sciences, as well as courses and practical experiences
in music therapy from the first semester of enrollment. This early emphasis
on professional, clinical, music-based therapy provides the student
with opportunities to view and explore traditional, new, and alternative
music therapy practices. Particular attention is given to the personal
growth process of each student, and students may choose the approach
which best fits their abilities and personal philosophy.
Music therapists
typically seek employment in hospitals, psychiatric facilities, nursing
homes, prisons, training schools and centers for persons with mental,
emotional, and physical impairments, public schools, personal growth
centers, and pain, rehabilitation and wellness centers. Students within
the UM Music Therapy Program complete their clinical practicum at a
wide variety of sites, including the world-renowned Jackson Memorial
Hospital. Music therapy graduates have enjoyed a job placement rate
of virtually 100% in recent years.
