What is “Mini Musicians”?

Did you know?

Florida Music Therapy hosts a music therapy group every Saturday at 10am!

The group is called Mini Musicians and is open to anyone ages 2-5. There is absolutely no prior music experience required! Want to know more? Here’s some insight into what our group will look like:

Each session includes:

  • A hello song to practice social skills

  • A musical storybook

  • Group drumming for community and validation

  • Movement, dance, and parachute play for energy release and coordination

  • Stretching and calming music for self-regulation

  • A goodbye song to close

A typical session begins with a warm welcome through a hello song. Through the hello song, children learn social skills such as greetings and taking turns. After that we will jump right into our session as we begin with a book. Here at FMT we offer many well known books in the form of songs. Musical books provide an alternative form of media that effectively stimulates children's cognitive and sensory development through the use of auditory and literary elements. After the book we shake things up a little with a group drumming experience. Drum circles have been proven to provide a sense of community and validation. Following the drumming activity, the kiddos engage in movement and dance to release excess energy, while therapists and parents facilitate parachute play, creating a dynamic, multisensory experience that supports physical coordination and social interaction. To cool things down, we will wind down our sessions with stretching and relaxing facilitated by the music therapist. The therapist will play a calming melody on the guitar and guide the children through various stretching and breathing exercises in order to promote self-regulation. After all of that fun, we end the session just the way we began it with our goodbye song.
