Music Therapy from a Parent's Perspective

Parent: David was my second child and so I knew in terms of just charting the milestones that the kiddo would be on. We're not on the milestones. I saw that he was very responsive to music. When I first had the opportunity to take him to preschool, that was where I had a chance to meet this wonderful, amazing woman named Courtney, who was his music therapist. I had heard a little bit about music therapy, but it was still kind of vague, and I didn't get it until I really saw what that looked like. You have the IEP, all these different goals, and it's a stack of paper about this thick, so it's very overwhelming.

All the other therapists, clinicians, and teachers, they're weighing in on what's best for my child. I'm identifying with the music therapist in the room because she is saying exactly what I use at home, that mirrors, "This is what really works." Like, "I got that you have all this knowledge and education and that sounds great on paper," but what she said. To see my son be able to achieve goals that otherwise I didn't know how he was going to achieve them, it means the world to me, to be able to watch his development, both the capacity to increase his speech, using it to support seeing the kind of behaviors that we want to see. I don't feel like there's anything that my son can't do because at least I have the tools and resources.
